Great until you need a firmware update. If update fails nothing works. No options except via external USB. I have spent over 2 hours trying to get help from Yamaha, it tells you what position you are in the que then after a long time it says sorry no one available try later,got same result. Contacted operators twice, neither one knew what a home theater receiver was nor where to take it for service! Obviously Japanese aren’t running customer service center. I have owned Yamaha receivers since the 70’s and never had to deal with issues until this model. Totally disabling a device because an update didn’t process? Then no customer service support? I will think twice before purchasing Yamaha products in the future. Recommend looking at other manufacturers before you purchase.called on day 3 at exactly 10:00 AM EST. Immediate connection to representative. Tony was excellent and extremely helpful!!! I decided to take the receiver to service facility to check it out instead of updating via USB since it was cutting in and out, the reason I went to settings to begin with. It’s under warranty. Still think the customer service line and process needs some tweaking but again Tony was excellent so I changed my rating to a five star.

I bought the this unit with some reservations, only due to the reviews. This replaced an Onkyo that failed in three months. Before that it was a Denon and before that was a Marantz. Needless to say I’ve had bad luck in the receiver department. Now back to the Yamaha, this thing is a beast and relatively easy to get set up. There are two things that are annoying on this unit. #1 is the tiny screen on the front, you can’t read it unless you get right up to it. #2 is the giant volume knob on the front of this thing, unusually large. As far as power and sound, I have a 7.1 setup running Klipsch speakers. Plenty of power and fine tuning the setup was a breeze. If this receiver lasts longer than three months I’ll update my review. As for right now I would definitely recommend it.

This is my second one of these and after listening to mine a good friend bought 2 also (one for living room, one for basement home theater. I use my main one as a pre-amp and digital music processing system to push a 5 channel 300 watt per channel amp to listen to HD FLAC music and the occasional movie. The built in DAC is not the best but is perfectly acceptable for critical listening. I have compared it to several external DACs and it compares favorably. The music processing is very good especially the "All Channel Stereo" feature. It's heavy and well built.I recommend this receiver for anyone that listens to music as a primary activity.

Good product with good price. But beware, Yamaha certainly makes it difficult to setup and install. They can't seem to write clear, step by step instructions and the manual is staggering at about 400 pages. Replaced an old Yamaha receiver that lost the center channel amp at 8 yrs old - seems a bit short for an expensive item.

I picked this up for a really good price. I've been needing to upgrade for a long time. My RX-V3800 has long been due to be replaced (although, it makes a great second amp.) I'm not going into much detail as you will find in the other reviews and I will likely amend my review once I have more experience with unit.Setup was pretty straight forward. The unit out the box was doing some strange things with the eArc (and still kinda is, more on that in a bit,) but most of the issues were resovled after a firmware update.I know others have mentioned weird/anamolous issues with the communication of different manufacturers equipment via the HDMI and eArc. I have experienced this, too. My audio does not always sync with what is being played. Sometimes there's a 5-10 second delay from start of video to the time audio starts. Other times, there's just nothing. It's highly variable and some streaming apps perform differently. What I'm trying to determine is if it my TV/AVR interface (or maybe the streaming apps on the TV) or the A4A itself. I never had this audio delay with the RX-V3800 (granted not an eArc device.) Quickly using the Google-Machine, I found that my issues don't seem to be unique, but my home theater setup is definitely unique to me. I have not reached out to Yamaha yet, well, because I want to eliminate my known variables before pleading for help. I've tried all the obvious culprits with inconsistent results. It almost seems like there might be more than one interaction contributing to the audio issues.I don't want to make a full judgement on the this unit yet since I'm not certain there's not some strange interaciton between equipment and/or apps.So, I'm giving this unit a 5 star to start. It performs really well when the audio is pushed out correctly. MusicCast also works well. It's just the quirky thing with timing. I'll amend this review with my findings at a later date.EDIT: I was able to solve my issue. Since my initial review, Yamaha pushed out another firmware update. The update didn't solve the issue, but I noticed that the delay became more consistent and repeatable. After perusing recent reddit posts I started looking at my TV audio settings more closely. I changed my digital output format on the eArc from Auto to passthrough. My audio went crazy, but thought I'd restart the entire system to see what Id get. Whaaaalaaaa! After reboot the system worked perfect. I hope this helps someone and saves them some (painful) time. It tuned out not to be an exclusive issue with the A4A. However, there has to be some standard that makes the devices play well together. Whatever that is, someone didn't follow it.
