Phonics Through Poetry: Teaching Phonemic Awareness Using Poetry

There are a lot of wonderful poems in this book
There are a lot of wonderful poems in this book. There are two poems for each short vowel, long vowel, consonant and blends. I would give it 5 stars except there are several purposely misspelled common words. For example, the word get is spelled git in one poem. The poem for z spells was as waz and as is spelled az. I wouldn't expect this in a book that is supposed to teach children phonemic awareness and phonics. Wouldn't it be better to teach children that an s sometimes says the /z/ sound? Or, that get is correctly pronounced with the short /e/ sound and it spelled that way too?

Excellent Resource
This is just the best book ever for using literature to reinforce letter sounds. The poetry is precious and allows my students to hear the sound we are studying within text. I don't always have time to read a full storybook during a phonics lesson, but these poems are quick. I love this book.

Counterfeit copy
I love the content of this book, but I am pretty sure it is a counterfeit copy. It looks like it was a poor photocopy of the original book bound together. I lived in Asia where this is a common practice and I could tell right I was this is what I had received.

90% Correlates with my Orton-Gillingham curriculum
This was a recommended book from an Orton-Gillingham training I attended. It correlates very well with my early literacy chapter of my Orton-Gillingham lessons, however, it didn’t have any poems for digraphs. Perhaps the other level of this book might have the digraphs. Let’s see. But for now, an excellent resource.

I bought this item to use with my students. The kids love the catchy poems and can't wait to hear the news one each week. The poems are wonderful as a starting point for new subjects. Many of the students have even written there own poem to add to our growing collection.

Must-have
I'm a reading specialist and use these poems for a variety of activities with my students. This book and the grade 2-3 book are must-haves if you're teaching elementary aged children how to read well!
