Great Smaller Smoker
Love the smoker. It’s perfect for just two people. You do have to make sure you continually put coal and wood chips in it if you want that. My ribs came out delicious. I love the stand and I ended up purchasing the matching cover.

$500 book told me to get this
I got tired of the cheap $50 Walmart kettle pots my mom would bring by the house, insisting that we should barbeque together. Finally, I cranked out my $500 Modernist Cuisine collection and turned to the part where it talks about grilling.Basically, you want something that is reflective and angular. It's this combination of radiant heat that reflects at angles which provides a great cooking experience. That's actually a bit hard to find as more grills are black and black, through and through. So, I found this baby, ordered it, and put it together. Not to difficult. And, it isn't so big. But, man. Let me tell you that the difference is night and day from the struggles of a cheap round kettle pot that never would heat properly. I am loving this thing! While a bigger grill would have been nice, I didn't want to spend several more hundred on something I don't do as much. And, that I could take with me on trips if I wanted to. Well, the heating capability of this knocks through meat super fast, so space really isn't that much of a problem.Thank God for Masterbuilt and Modernist Cuisine. They've led me to my own promised land of great grilling!

I like it, but...
I bought this after seeing it in action on a dutch BBQ YouTube channel. I don't have too much storage space and I needed something portable, but I also wanted something that I can use to smoke brisket. It's doable on this grill as long as you use a smallish piece of meat and trim it so it doesn't touch the top or sides of the grill. Overall I'm very happy with it.On a not so positive note, the plastic on the back metal hinges was bubbling after 2 uses, which is very concerning. Also, the grill came in what seemed like a battered box and was missing a minor piece that connects the handle to the grill. I jerry rigged it so I can use the unit, but two weeks after the date of purchase I am still waiting for the part to come. Interacting with Masterbuilt was somewhat of an annoying chore because they are not very responsive.

Please Read this review if you are considering buying this item
I feel totally duped! I saw multiple video's on YouTube regarding this portable smoker from big BBQ names. They all received this smoker free as long as they made a video about it. I watched several of these video's and they all said how amazing this portable smoker is. So, I caved and spent $360 on one. Upon arrival the box was pretty much destroyed. Fourtanetly, nothing was damaged. I assembled the smoker and did two pre-cook seasonings prior to cooking with it. My first cook was two 1/2 lb hamburgers. Keep in mind, I followed the directions to a T. After approximately 30 minutes of smoking the burgers I checked on them and they were totally burnt. The temperature gauge read between 225 - 250 the entire time. I do this type of cook all the time with my pellet smoker and have never had this problem. Second cook was two very nice filet mignon's. I again smoked the filets for 30 minutes prior to checking on them and same exact thing, burnt. Third cook was one 1/2 lb Hamburger and it cooked super fast and I literally checked on it every five minutes. It was fully cooked in about 15 minutes. The flavor non impressive. I don't know what the hype is all about with this smoker. It runs extremely hot and the temperature gauge does not accurately reflect cooking temperature. Secondly, adjacent to the coal box is extremely hot and since the grate is so small you lose space on this already tiny smoker. I love the concept but I am not impressed with this smoker. I'm now skeptical about buying the larger version of this. I also read all of the reviews for this smoker the Good and bad and saw alot of comments about there being a learning curve. This portable smoker basically cooks like an offset grill. If I have to check on my food every fives minutes then I might as well buy a traditional stick smoker. Sorry Masterbuilt I'm not impressed. I returned my purchase 3 weeks after buying for a full refund. If you buy this portable smoker you have 30 days to return it for a full refund.

This is a nice product
This is a nice smoker for something small if you’re only gonna cook for an hour or an hour and a half, however, for a long cook, the pot isn’t large enough to put enough clothes in the bottom so you would wind up having too much ash buildup in the fire wouldn’t stay hot. Also I found that we had The locking mechanism melted off and we were very happy to say the company stood behind it and sent us a new one at no charge so overall great product.

Great portable smoker!
Absolutely love this grill/smoker. So far I’ve done some brisket, as well as a couple spatchcock chickens.During my initial burn in I cranked the fan all the way to the max settings and filled up the basket as recommended in the manual for the initial burn off. I saw temps maxed out around 500-550, as advertised. The burn out took just under 2 hours and left the ash dump full.A few briquettes added onto a full hopper of charcoal got me just over 4 hours of cooking time at 275f steady. The ash dump was again filled to the top by the end, so expect to empty the ash dump on longer cooks. All of this was done using B&B competition charcoal briquettes and some oak chunks I had lying around. As for the battery life. I used a set of Eneloop rechargeable batteries and got about 5-6 hours of cooking time before I had to change them out. I’m VERY impressed!Masterbuilt really should have put the Gravity name on this grill, as it functions essentially in the same manner as it’s much bigger siblings. This is a missed opportunity and may confuse some others who might think this is only a grill…it’s not!I also expect this will get some decent aftermarket support in the form of upgraded grill grates, etc.TL;DRIt works, it’s efficient, and you should get one if you’re in the market for a portable smoker and grill.
