The New Standards: 64 Popular Modern Songs

A good value till you start trying to play the songs...
This is a comprehensive collection of great tunes that seem to have been well composed. I use the word "composed" because this isn't a transcription of the actual keyboard parts from the original songs, but rather an interpretation of the melody and bass lines of each tune. So, useful if you want to play these songs in a recognizable form for others (or for yourself) on a keyboard. NOT useful if you need a cheat book for Jam sessions with your pals who would have been expecting your keys part to sound like the record. Further - as noted on the cover - this is pretty simple music with limited chord complexity. What's worse, it appears no one at HL actually PLAYED all these tunes all the way through to test them before publication. While we've found several wrong notes scattered through a few songs, in at least one tune - the composition is simply wrong when both the treble and bass parts are played together. Each alone sounds fine - but they are utterly atonal when played in unison. It's as if two people were tasked with transcribing each part and they never conferred to make sure they were in tune! We haven't worked through the whole book - but so far - we're not impressed. Not recommended unless we find this is only one bad instance of poor composition.
